While the broadest way to classify wines is by color, there are several different varieties of each. Different production areas tend to use different varieties of grapes and ingredients, which gives the wine identifiable characteristics based on where it is from. Understanding different wines can help you decide what type of wine is best paired with your food.
In places like Italy and Austria, where vines are plentiful, the moscato varietal thrives. Moscato wine receives its flavor from the muscat grape, which creates an aroma that smells of grapefruit. Moscato is fruity and typically sweet, and thus can be drank with dessert. However, this wine may be best on its own, after dining on dessert.
Chardonnay is a very versatile white wine; it can be made under different conditions and it can be sparkling or still. It is a full-bodied wine, so it is full of flavor and texture. Chardonnay from warmer climates like Australia and Argentina may have higher alcohol content than its cooler climate counterparts. Citrus flavors are typically a staple of this type of white wine, and a buttery influence is observed when the wine is fermented in new oak barrels. Chardonnay is enhances your dining experience with chicken or fish.
Compared to Chardonnay wines, Riesling is light and fresh. The taste of a Riesling wine is heavily dependent on where it was made; German Riesling balances sweetness with acidity, while Eastern United States Riesling is drier and less sweet. In general, Rieslings improve as they age and usually smell of apples. When drinking this type of white wine with a meal, consider tuna, salmon, or eel; Riesling’s dry crispness combines nicely with fish.
Now that you understand the different varieties of white wine, come to a 310 Restaurant to sample them. Call us at (888) 842-2658 or stop by one of our Orlando or Winter Park locations.
